Surinamese Maroons participate in the celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of the peace treaty between Maroons and the Netherlands, in Paramaribo October 10, 2010. The Maroons -descendants of runaway African slaves, who live mainly in the country’s dense tropical forests claim that the treaty acknowledged their freedom and landowning rights.
Suriname President Desi Bouterse and other government officials attended the wreath laying ceremony at the ’10 oktober 1760 Square’. Apart from the traditional libation, Maroons nation-wide celebrated this day.
