Desi Bouterse, was elected as president of Suriname by 36 lawmakers, to serve his first five-year term.
The 50 members of the Dutch-speaking, South American country’s National Assembly voted during a special assembly over challenger Chandrikapersad Santokhi, who had been backed by the outgoing New Front (NF) government.
Bouterse, 64, was declared winner one hour later, eliciting applause from lawmakers, special guests, diplomats and some 200 party supporters outside the parliaments building, who watched the elections live on big screen. His running mate Robert Ameerali, chairman of Chamber of Commerce was elected as vicepresident.
Outgoing president Ronald Venetiaan who was elected as legislator, joins the parliament after swearing his successor. Venetiaan has served the country three times as Head of State.
